Job description

The astroparticle physics group at the Faculty of Technology, Department of Physics and Electrical Engineering invites outstanding candidates for a PhD position in gamma-ray astrophysics. The group works in Very-High-Energy gamma-ray astronomy and astrophysics and participates in the H.E.S.S. experiment and in the CTA project. In addition, the group is proposing the construction of ALTO, a wide-field and high-altitude gamma-ray observatory to be installed in the southern hemisphere, please visit the website lnu.se/en/ap for more information.

The successful candidate will be based in Växjö (Småland, Sweden), and will work on data analysis and hardware activities, among which there are:


optimization of the analysis of ALTO Monte Carlo simulations (signal/background discrimination, possible angular/energy resolution improvements, etc.); laboratory tests and performance evaluation of the ALTO prototype(s);


analysis and interpretation of multi-wavelength data of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) observed by H.E.S.S. and possible contribution to the CTA AGN programme

The PhD position duration is 4 years (full research time).

Requirements

A person fulfils the general entry requirements if he/she:


Has been awarded a degree on second-cycle level;


Has completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level, or


in other way, in Sweden or abroad, has acquired principally equivalent knowledge.

Specific prerequisites for admission to graduate studies in Physics are required.


a minimum of 90 higher education credits in the subject Physics or in subjects related to the doctoral level studies, or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other manner either in Sweden or abroad, and


a good command of Swedish and/or English.

Assessment grounds

Applications to graduate studies are governed by rules in the admission regulations.

The selection of candidates is made with regard to the applicant's ability to successfully complete and benefit from their studies at the graduate level. The assessment takes into account academic skills documented in scientific works, especially focused on the quality of the essays at the undergraduate level, any advanced work and other scientific or scholarly works. The assessment also takes into account breadth and composition of the undergraduate degree as well as the picture which the intended principal academic supervisor, examiner, and other colleagues in the research group and the subject obtained of the applicant's potential.

The applicants are ranked by the entity concerned for the graduate education after a statement of opinion is received from the prospective principal academic supervisor with proposals on order of precedence.

Selection among applicants who meet the requirements of §35 and §36 will be made with regard to their potential ability to benefit from the educational programme.

Additional assessment grounds

The successful candidate has excellent analytical and problem solving skills, is a committed researcher with a drive for excellence. Prior research experience concerning the subject matter is a significant advantage. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential to publish and present results at international conferences and in international journals. Advanced skills in computing are a key requirement as all activities are carried out in Linux/Unix environments and using C++/Python programming languages. Interpersonal skills and flexibility are of key importance since the work is done in a research group.

The contract can start immediately after the candidate has been selected.
