At the Ecology Centre of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), in Uppsala, Sweden, we conduct research on populations, communities and ecosystems. We generate knowledge on how land use and climate affects animals, plants, nutrient cycling and greenhouse gas balance, and develop sustainable solutions for the future. Active outreach and frequent dialogue with stakeholders are key activities.
Determinants of soil biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in a changing environment
Description:
Northern high-latitude soils are one of the greatest global reservoirs of carbon (C) stocks globally, and they also harbour a biodiversity of microorganisms, soil animals and plants. At the same time, they are susceptible to disturbances and changes caused by climate change. Although it is well known that soil microbes regulate soil C and nutrient dynamics in terrestrial ecosystems, little is known about how global changes in climate and land use may alter their diversity, ecosystem functioning and interactions with other organisms in these systems, especially as concerns forest and agricultural soils.
We are looking for a motivated PhD student to study the ecology of soil organisms in forest or agro-ecosystems. The project will determine the relative importance of biotic and abiotic factors as well as human interventions on soil biodiversity and functioning. We will use advanced molecular methods to determine taxonomic identity and functions, combined with carefully designed experiments to disentangle the effects of the biotic, abiotic and anthropogenic factors. The work will involve field studies, molecular analyses, high-throughput data processing and statistical analysis.
Qualifications:
The candidate is expected to have a degree (MSc) in biology, ecology, microbiology or molecular biology or equivalent. We are particularly looking for a candidate who enjoys working both in the field and laboratory. Experience in usingmolecular techniques, bioinformatics and statistics will be an advantage. The candidate should also have good communication and writing skills in English.
The application must include (1) a cover letter, describing the candidate's research interests, experiences and motivation to apply for the position, (2) a CV, (3) contact information to at least two reference persons, and (4) certified copies of the applicants university exams. The applicant may also include other documents such as a certificate of English language proficiency (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL test scores), proof of research experience etc.
Place of work:
The position is affiliated with the Department of Ecology, SLU, Uppsala.
Forms for funding or employment:
Employment as PhD student for 4-years.
Starting date:
The candidate should be able to start their work during spring 2020, before the field season.
