The research is highly multidisciplinary and will revolve around the development of new cutting edge engine core technology as well as to develop radical heat-management concepts that rely on hydrogen to improve the overall efficiency and reduce the non-CO2 emissions of future aircraft applications. The work includes the development of system models, conceptual design, and CFD validation of key technologies, were you will have the possibility of collaborating with a fellow PhD student working in the same topic.
The project is run as a large EU collaborative effort (www.minimal-aviation.eu) between Chalmers, leading European institutions on aerospace research and engine OEM's. As a Ph.D. student you will establish a strong contact network within some of the most active research groups in aerospace propulsion in Europe. Additionally, it establishes contacts with a wide range of potential future employers in the aircraft engine industry. It is also the intention that, as part of the Ph.D. position, a 2-4 month research stay at an internationally well-established university will be made.
Starting date is flexible, we can accomodate imediate recruitment or at a later time (no later than the 31st of August).
Description
The position will be a part of the division of Fluid Dynamics (M2). Our research at the division covers turbulent flow (both compressible and incompressible), aero-acoustics, and turbomachines. Our tools include both computations and experiments. In some research projects, the smallest turbulent scales are studied whereas in others the function of a complete gas turbine is modelled.
The research group of turbomachinery and aeroacoustics, consisting of two professors, one associate professor, one assistant professor, two researchers and 9 Ph.D. students, is part of the fluid dynamics division. The group works mainly within the area of turbomachinery applications for aeroengines. The research focus is on system level assesment, engine concept evaluation, and detailed high speed compressible flow in compressors, turbines, transition ducts, heat-exchangers, combustors/afterburners and nozzles. The turbomachinery and heat-exchanger design capabilities range from simple meanline calculations to detailed large-eddy simulations using in-house codes developed for the simulation of high-speed internal compressible flows. Validation data is provided by our compressor and turbine exhaust rigs at Reynolds number representative flow conditions. Your research will rely on the group capability to investigate the performance of new propulsion technology and to conceptually design compact heat-management technology.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities as a PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. Your research will be supervised by well-reputed senior researchers and since the group has a strong position in aircraft propulsion you will be encouraged to collaborate with fellow students on publications and courses. The everyday work also means taking a number of doctoral courses, reviewing literature, designing research studies, interacting with industrial companies, collecting and analysing empirical data, and reporting research results.
The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to up to 10 percent of working hours. The position is a full-time temporary employment limited to a maximum of 4,5 years.
Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Physics, Engineering Chemistry with Physics or equivalent with special interest within relevant fields in fluid dynamics, turbomachinery. The position requires oral and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not required, but you will be encouraged to learn Swedish during employment. Experience with multidisciplinary design in aerospace technology, programming (Python, Matlab), hands-on experience with CFD tools, writing of scientific papers are meritorious.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of four and a half years.
