Work tasks
Multiresistant bacteria pose a global threat comparable to climate change. Infections that previously have been treatable, but now are resistant to treatment, will in the future become more common, which will lead to an increase in death rate caused by infections. Antibiotic resistant bacteria also threaten highly advanced medical treatments, including transplantations, cancer and neonatal care. We know very little of how common specific antibiotic resistant patterns are in the environment. Thus, this PhD project will focus on the analyses of ESBL (Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase) resistance genes and bacteria in the aquatic environment, and to what extent this resistance pattern is regulated by different abiotic and biotic parameters. The project will include development of molecular identification methods for the detection of ESBL in environmental samples of different origin, as well as for detection in clinical samples.
The position is based at Kristianstad University, but courses and seminars tied to the general PhD program are located at Lund University. Teaching at Kristianstad University amounting to a maximum of two months per year may become part of the duties.
Eligibility and qualifications
A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she: has been awarded a second-cycle qualification has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
We are searching for highly motivated applicants with a degree in biomedical laboratory science (biomedicinsk analytiker), preferably with a profile in microbiology, but applicants with degrees in biology/molecular biology/biomedicine may also be considered. Experiences in microbiology, molecular biology and aquatic ecology are valuable. The ability to communicate in English as well as a Scandinavian language is a strong asset. The holder will work independently as well as part of a team.
Additional information
To start immediately. Coverage 100%, which up to 20% teaching. The appointment lasts for four years (five years at 20% teaching). Kristianstad University strives for gender balance and diversity.
