At the Department of Aquatic Resources of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU Aqua), we are looking for a highly motivated PhD-student to work with the spatial distribution and dynamics of commercial marine fish species. The distribution of several of the main fish species of the Baltic Sea has dramatically changed during the past 30 years, with consequences for both ecosystem functioning and fisheries. This creates large challenges for the assessment and the management of these resources. Nevertheless, the factors shaping the spatial distribution of these fish species are poorly known. This project aims to gain a better understanding of the processes affecting the spatio-temporal dynamics of fish populations, with particular focus on cod and flounder. Specifically the objectives are to (i) study the habitat preferences of the fish species using archived data and new sampling; (ii) identify, quantify, and understand the drivers of the changes in the spatial distribution of the species; (iii) study the potential interactions between and within species. The objectives of the project will be achieved using different statistical modelling techniques and field/laboratory work. The results of the project will generate new knowledge on the ecology of commercially exploited species that could be used in the future fisheries and ecosystem-based management. The PhD student will work in the stock assessment research group at SLU Aqua in Lysekil with working and training periods in Öregrund. SLU Aqua has extensive national and international collaborations. The PhD project will be part of the international BONUS project "INSPIRE: Integrating spatial processes into ecosystem models for sustainable utilization of fish resources", a collaboration of research groups from seven different countries. The PhD position includes opportunity of exchanges within this large research network around the Baltic Sea and participation in offshore research surveys.
Beskrivning av kvalifikationer/qualifications:
The candidate should have a MSc degree or equivalent in Biology/Ecology/Environmental Sciences, or in Statistics/Mathematics with strong interest for ecology. Particular merits are considered experience of ecosystem and/or population modeling, statistical evaluation of time-series and spatial data, and familiarity to work with large datasets. Familiarity of working with R and GIS will be considered a strong merit. Previous experience with laboratory work is desirable. Personal qualities such as dedication, high degree of self-motivation, and ability to collaborate will be considered essential. Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English are required. The selection will be based on written application, CV, diploma/exam work, personal references, and an interview.
