Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies
The Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies (VFM) is part of the Faculty of Forest Sciences at SLU. It is based in Umeå and the research activities extend throughout Sweden and beyond. Our areas of focus are research, education, and environmental analysis (FOMA) within our four focus areas: aquatic ecology, molecular ecology, restoration ecology (terrestrial and aquatic environments) and animal ecology. Activities of VFM contribute to meeting national commitments for terrestrial and aquatic habitat and are needs-driven and open to collaboration both nationally and internationally. VFM has about 70 employees and a turnover of about 60 million per year. Our employees come from more than 10 countries, which contributes to an international and welcoming atmosphere.

PhD Position in Biodiversity and Hydropower at the Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies

Research subject (Biology)
Description:
The project aims to investigate the potential of hydropower for making positive impacts on aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity. The candidate will quantify the effect of hydrological and hydraulic conditions on both aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity under scenarios of climate change and flow regulations. Novel methods such as eDNA and drones for characterizing, measuring and quantifying biodiversity will be tested to identify the potential for habitat restorations and investments by the hydropower industry at the dams and adjacent sites. The candidate will collaborate with hydrologists, engineers and social scientists to integrate diverse perspectives and their impacts on future biodiversity along with assessing the acceptance of Hydropower as a source of clean renewable energy for the future.

The PhD position will be part of the RE-HYDRO project, financed by EU - INTERREG Aurora and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

Qualifications:
We seek an ambitious candidate with a strong aptitude for field work, quantitative and modelling background in ecology, advanced skills in statistics and data analyses are almost essential. A master degree in ecology or biology. The candidate should be able to work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment, and have a good level of autonomy and creativity. A good knowledge of spoken English and writing skills are essential. Knowledge of Swedish is a plus. The expected start of the position is as soon as possible. The place of work will be the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Umeå, with occasional trips to the field sites in northern Sweden and Finland.

To qualify for third-cycle (Doctoral) courses and study programmes, you must have a second-cycle (Master's) qualification. Alternatively, you must have conducted a minimum of four years of full-time study, of which a minimum of one year at second-cycle level.

Applicants will be selected based on their written application and CV, degree project, copies of their degree certificate and transcript of records from previous first and second-cycle studies at a university or higher education institution, two personal references, and knowledge of English.
