The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment is working with applied environmental science, with a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, microbial ecology as well as on environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology. The department has about 150 employees, of which approximately half are researchers/doctoral students and the other half are technical and administrative staff.

Research subject: Biology with specialization in Ecology
Description:
You will be part of a research project exploring the dispersal of planktonic organisms in inland saline lakes, with a particular emphasis on soda lakes. The project employs a wide range of methodologies, including laboratory and field experiments, molecular techniques, bioinformatics, and community assembly modeling.
The primary goal is to enhance our understanding of how planktonic microorganisms disperse and to use this knowledge to refine community assembly models. The project involves extensive fieldwork and sampling campaigns, complemented by molecular laboratory analyses.
Planktonic diversity will be studied using both metabarcoding and metagenomic techniques, while community assembly will be assessed through advanced statistical methods.
Qualifications:
You must hold a master's degree (or equivalent) in biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field. Merits include experience in aquatic ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and statistics.
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Relevant experiences and competences also include fieldwork and molecular laboratory techniques, as well as the possession of a valid driving licence.
Furthermore, you should demonstrate critical and creative thinking, strong good problem solving skills, and the ability to take own initatives.
Applicants must be able to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

To qualify for third-cycle (Doctoral) courses and study programmes, you must have a second-cycle (Master's) qualification. Alternatively, you must have conducted a minimum of four years of full-time study, of which a minimum of one year at second-cycle level.
