Topic "Environmental effects of engineered nanoparticles - Environmental
Chemistry and Ecotoxicology" Project description: The small sizes of
engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), their highnumbers per mass, the arrangements of
their atoms and their surface chemistry give ENPs advanced reactivity and other
specific properties that are significantly different from those of the
corresponding bulk materials. Increasing evidence shows that ENPs might have
adverse effects on human health and the environment. We are inviting
applications for a PhD position in a multidisciplinary project in which we will
investigate whether conventional risk assessment approaches are valid for
assessing the impact of ENPs on aquatic ecosystems or whether (and which)
adaptations are necessary. As part of the PhD project a case study will be
carried out, in which the toxicity of engineered silver and titaniumdioxid
nanoparticles to aquatic bacteria, microalgae and ecological communities of
these will be determined. Emphasis shall be given to chronic, long-term effects
of the ENPs on various levels of biological complexity using a range of
endpoints such as growth and species composition (determined e.g. as pigment
profiles or TGGE patterns). All experiments will be carried out in a
physicochemically controlled environment and emphasis will be given to the
characterisation of the actual exposure in the experiments using analytical
methods such as light scattering, field-flow fractionation, ICP-MS and
voltammetry. Interactions between the microorganisms and the nanoparticles will
also be characterised by electron microscopy. Furthermore, the PhD-student is
supposed to participate in the development of new analytical methods in order to
improve the environmental exposure assessment of ENPs. In addition, the student
will also collaborate with another new PhD student within the project at
Chalmers, Environmental Systems Analysis, working with emission scenarios and
risk assessment from a life cycle analysis perspective. The PhD student will
also take part in the activities of the nanoparticle and ecotoxicogenomic
platforms of Göteborg University. Terms of employment: The 4-year PhD
program includes 3 years of research and one year of course work (60
ETCS-points). These positions will be extended by one year if 20% teaching
assistance and administration is included in the contract. If so, successful
applicants will be expected to teach in a Scandinavian language and/or in
English. Qualifications: Candidates must have read at least three semesters in
chemistry or biology with no less than 30 ECTS in chemistry and no less than 30
ECTS in biology and should have a degree in Chemistry, Biology or Environmental
Sciences. Previous studies in environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry,
physical chemistry, aquatic toxicology, environmental microbiology and / or
ecotoxicology are desirable. Proven experience in multidisciplinary work is a
plus. Further information may be obtained from Martin Hassellöv,
