PhD project: The main aim of this thesis will be to establish and characterize an in vitro model of Parkinson's disease that is based on patient derived reprogrammed neurons cultured on collagen hydrogel scaffolds. The cells will be functionally characterized using in vitro electrophysiology. The effect of cell phenotype and function of neurotrophic and anti-inflammatory factors will be tested and delivered using functionalized scaffolds with the aim to determine their therapeutic potential.
The project is part of BrainMatTrain, a four-year project, funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 Programme (H2020- MSCA-ITN-2015) under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Initial Training Network and Grant Agreement No. 676408. The project focuses on the scale up, commercialisation and translation of functionalised biomaterial constructs for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The BrainMatTrain network comprises four academic institutes, two hospitals and two industry partners from seven European countries (Ireland, Austria, Sweden, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, and United Kingdom).
