Today phosphating, a well-known technology since more than 30 years, is a key pre-treatment process in the automotive industry. The phosphate conversion layer created in this process is a prerequisite for good paint adhesion and good corrosion resistance. The phosphate conversion layer has proved to be a very effective barrier towards corrosion and is one reason why Volvo cars today experience practically no corrosion. The phosphate process is questioned for environmental reasons such as heavy metals and energy consumption. It is likely that due to environmental demands phosphating will be exchanged with an alternative pretreatment process (New Automotive Surface Pretreatments) within the coming 5 to 10 years. The knowledge about their behavior (corrosion and paint adhesion) under a paint layer on a car is very scarce.
The objective of the PhD work is to understand the corrosion and adhesion mechanisms for a New Automotive Surface Pretreatment layer in combination with different metal substrates and paint systems. The knowledge obtained will be a very important contribution to secure the quality of our future products.
