LTH forms the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, with approximately 9 000 students. The research carried out at LTH is of a high international standard and we are continuously developing our teaching methods and adapting our courses to current needs.

The Department of Physics is with a staff of about 350 scientists and educators one of the largest departments within Lund University. There are seven research divisions and a number of research centra within the department. The research activities at the department cover a broad spectrum of modern physics. www.fysik.lu.se/english .

The Division of Combustion Physics runs a comprehensive operation, with a focus on the development of laser-spectroscopic techniques for basic and applied combustion research.

The division has many contacts within the Faculty of Engineering, other universities and local industry, as well as strong international ties. The division is since 2001 located in modern facilities in the Enoch Thulin Laboratory at the Department of Physics, and currently employs approximately 50 people.

Job assignment
The research project concerns development of new as well as advancement of existing laser-diagnostic measurement concepts using ultrashort (femtosecond/picosecond) laser pulses. Although of fundamental spectroscopic character, the development will have its focus on applications in plasma, catalysis, gasification/pyrolysis, and diagnostics of nanostructure production. A number of existing laser-spectroscopic methods, non-linear (coherent) techniques in particular, might be significantly advanced by using fs/ps laser pulses. Measurement situations for which only a single window or inspection hole is provided are common in many of the aforementioned applications. Therefore new, so-called single-ended, techniques will be explored, specifically concepts based on backward air lasing and stimulated gain.

The main task for the doctoral student will be to devote themselves to research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. In addition, those appointed to doctoral student position may be required to work with other departmental duties such as educational tasks, research, and technical/administrative duties (no more than 20 %).

Entry requirements
A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she has

• has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
• has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
• has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

A person meets the specific admission requirements for the third cycle studies in Physics if he or she has

• at least 30 credits of relevance to the subject, including at least 15 second-cycle credits, and a second-cycle degree project of 15 credits of relevance to the field, or
• an MSc in engineering in engineering physics or an associated field, or a Master's degree in physics or an associated field.

Other requirements:
Good knowledge in spoken and written English is a requirement.

Basis of assessment
Selection to postgraduate studies is based on the expected ability to perform well in the studies. The evaluation of the ability to perform well is based primarily on the results of studies at the basic and advanced levels, in particular:

• Knowledge and skills relevant to postgraduate studies within the research area, such as a broad and thorough preparation in physics.
• Estimated ability to work independently and the ability to formulate and solve scientific questions.
• Skills in written and oral communication.
• Other experience relevant to postgraduate studies, such as professional experience.
Other merits:
Documented theoretical knowledge in laser spectroscopy, atomic and molecular physics, and non-linear optics, such as courses within these fields, is a merit. Practical experience from any of these areas is a merit as well.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through his or her experience and skills, is deemed to have the abilities necessary for successfully completing the third cycle programme.

Terms of employment
Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to PhD position The duration of PhD studies is 4 years full time studies. In addition, teaching and other institutional duties normally occur at a level of at most 20% of full time. The position is then extended correspondingly, however not longer than corresponding to 5 years full time employment. Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1998:80).

Application procedure
Applications must contain a cover letter in which applicants describe themselves and their particular research interests. Applications must also include a CV, a copy of the applicant's Master thesis (or a summary text if the thesis is not yet completed), contact details of at least two references, copies of grade certificates, and any other documents that the applicant wishes to refer to. Applicants are also required to answer the job specific questions as the first step of the application process.

Lunds universitet välkomnar sökande med olika bakgrund och erfarenheter. Vi ser jämställdhet och mångfald som en styrka och tillgång.
