This PhD student position will be in the research area Energy and Environmental Engineering and the employment involves work in the research profile of Future Energy and within the research project of ?Thermo-physical properties of carbon dioxide mixtures with impurities and their impacts on carbon capture and storage?. The project is supported by the Swedish Energy Agency via Swedish Research Council. The overall purpose of the project is to develop accurate thermo-physical methods with robust calculations of carbon dioxide mixtures with impurities for carbon capture and storage (CCS) to bridge the gaps between fundamental scientific calculations and applications. The work mainly includes theoretical studies, modeling and simulations. The results will be presented at meetings, seminars, conferences and scientific journals. The employment may include collaboration and co-production with the surrounding research colleagues and researchers from other universities/institutes/companies.
The profile Future Energy is included in one of the four priority strategic areas in MDH. In 2013 the Future Energy Profile is awarded with a grant of ca 83 million SEK by the Swedish Knowledge Foundation (KKS) together with five industrial partners including ABB, Mälarenergi, Eskilstuna Energi och Miljö, Vafab and Aspholmen. Three Tracks including Renewable Energy, Efficiency and Emission Mitigation, and Smarter Modelling, Optimization & Management are included in the Profile with about 50 scientists and researchers.
The specific targets to be developed in the Future Energy profile toward 2019 are:
To pursue fundamental new understanding of materials and processes in energy, chemistry and microbiology that may revolutionize or transform future energy technologies, usually focused on scientific showstoppers;
To develop theoretical tools for guiding pre-experiment discovery and modelling by converting and turning complex models, e.g. computational fluid dynamics (CFD) or statistical models, into robust and simplified ones for simulation, optimisation and control purposes;
To create benchmark component combinations for enabling technologies, optimise prototype performance and to explore the feasibility of scaling up into industrial applications for solar PV systems, waste and water treatment, biogas production, high temperature gasification, and combined heat and power production and other industrial processes.
