Position description
The project's guiding vision is autonomous machines that are used for asphalting roads. The overall goal of such an autonomous solution is to provide higher quality road construction also with an overall lower risk for humans involved in such work.
The focus of this PhD student position is to address research challenges related to such automated road construction. Research challenges of the project include modelling, algorithm construction and embedded system design. Work includes analysis of machines involved in road construction, including machines used in Sweden and by Skanska AB. Asphalting (dispersion and compacting) is conducted guided using sensor data, e.g., characteristics of asphalt temperature and density, and geographical data/landscape maps, e.g., Land XML. Such data is to be used for machine control of a set of integrated machines used for the asphalting part of road construction.
Guiding the design of the embedded system architecture needed to realize such a system - a cyber physical system tailored for automated road construction - are requirements inherent in the ability of collecting correct and relevant data (sensors, algorithms, computations) along with conducting automated and seamless route planning of machines (algorithms, computations).
The project is funded by Skanska Sverige AB, the Knowledge Foundation (KKS) and SBUF (the construction industry's organization for research and development).
Qualifications
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. For futher information see Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100).
