Project title
Studies exploring the role of serotonin for establishing inter-individual differences in proneness for anxiety
Job assignments
This aim of this project is to address three related issues:
i) are inter-individual differences in proneness for anxiety in part due to inter-individual differences in brain serotonergic neurotransmission?
ii) can gender differences in behaviour in part be accounted for by an influence of sex steroids on brain serotonergic neurotransmission?
iii) how are the anxiogenic effects of brain serotonergic transmission - illustrated by the paradoxical increase in anxiety often observed upon acute administration of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) - exerted?
By gaining enhanced insight into these three issues, we believe that we will also shed light on the important but yet unanswered question why SSRIs, at long term administration, exert anxiety-reducing and antidepressants effects, which might hopefully contribute the development of new and better treatments.
The project will be based mainly on animal experiments; however, in order to broaden the experience of the PhD student, one of the papers planned to be included will be a clinical study, addressing the same issues as the studies using rodents.
PhD positions are financed mainly through education grants during the first two years and employment as doctoral students during the last two years and pertains to a doctoral degree
Eligibility
The general entry requirement is fulfilled if you have either 1, a second cycle degree (usually described as a masters degree) or 2, completed courses at an academic level corresponding to at least 240 credits. At least 60 of these credits (corresponding to 1 year of full-time studies) must be at second cycle level. You also need to fulfill the specific entry requirement which is an English proficiency requirement equal to the Swedish course Engelska B.
Assessment
After the application deadline has passed, an initial assessment of the candidates eligibility is made at the faculty office and sent to the project supervisor for selection. The process can then take up to 6 months before a candidate is selected.
