Project title
Prevention of blood lipid retention in the vessel wall

Job assignments
The overall goal of this project is to study if a certain type of vessel wall thickening (intimal hyperplasia) is the foundation for atherosclerosis by serving as a trap for LDL-cholesterol (Low density Lipoproteins, "the bad cholesterol"). Vessel wall accumulation of LDL is believed to cause the inflammatory reaction that ultimately can lead to atherosclerosis. Intimal hyperplasia is naturally formed in several human arteries, such as the coronary arteries and the abdominal aorta. It is also formed following vascular interventions, such as bypass surgery. Independent of the origin of this thickening, vessels that form intimal hyperplasia are prone to develop atherosclerosis later on in life. However, it is not known whether this association is causative or non-causative.

In this project we will test the hypothesis that intimal hyperplasia causes atherosclerosis by increasing the vessel wall binding to LDL. Two models to study the binding of LDL-cholesterol to intimal hyperplasia have been developed - one in vitro and one in vivo model. We will also test the hypothesis that positively charged peptides can block LDL binding to intimal hyperplasia. Finally we will test the hypothesis that HDL (High Density Lipoproteins, "the good cholesterol"), functions as an endogenous competitor for LDL binding to the vessel wall.

Methods/assignments: Small animal surgery, mouse breeding, isolation of lipoproteins, protein chemistry, immunohistochemistry, molecular biology techniques.

PhD positions are financed mainly through education grants during the first two years and employment as doctoral students during the last two years and pertains to a docotral degree

Eligibility
The general entry requirements are fulfilled if you have either 1, a second cycle degree (usually described as a masters degree) or 2, completed courses at an academic level corresponding to at least 240 education credits.
