Project title
Cell Transitions in Human Sarcomas at the Single-Cell level
Job assignments
This PhD project aims to reveal the nature and characteristics of tumor subpopulations and to map cell transition processes in human sarcomas. The work is translational in its nature and will be performed in close association with industry as well as with national and international academic collaborators. Furthermore, the project is experimental oriented, including molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and bioinformatics. Novel analytical techniques will be applied and a successful student is expected to achieve top-expertise in the research field of single-cell tumor biology with a focus on human sarcomas. Cell heterogeneity in cancer biology is often ignored despite the fact that the variability is thought to be of fundamental importance for cells to response and adapt to environmental changes such as drug treatment. By using quantitative single cell analyses, a new, innovative, research tool for characterization and understanding tumor heterogeneity will be applied to understand human sarcomas. In the short-term perspective we expect that this project will reveal fundamental information about tumor origin, tumor cell diversity and deeper understanding of molecular mechanisms in sarcoma development. Ultimately, this will contribute to the development of novel treatment paradigms and a more precise diagnosis and prognosis of cancer patients.
The project will be performed at Sahlgrenska Cancer Center, which is a recently created cancer center focusing on translational cancer research. The center is a joint effort between the Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg and the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The long-term goal of the center is to improve the care of cancer patients by facilitating new scientific discoveries and translating these into clinical practice. Sahlgrenska Cancer Center offers a highly dynamic and intellectual stimulating environment, close access to essential core facilities/equipment and excellent opportunities for collaborations with neighboring research teams. Joint activities include regular and open research seminars at the center.
PhD positions are financed mainly through education grants during the first two years and employment as doctoral students during the last two years and pertains to a docotral degree.
Eligibility
The general entry requirements are fulfilled if you have either 1, a second cycle degree (usually described as a masters degree) or 2, completed courses at an academic level corresponding to at least 240 education credits. At least 60 of these credits must be at second cycle level. 60 credits is equal to one year of full-time studies. You also need to fulfill the specific entry requirements which is an English language requirement; Engelska B.
Assessment
After the application deadline has passed, an initial assessment of the candidates eligibility is made at the faculty office and sent to the project supervisor for selection. The process can then take up to 6 months before a candidate is selected.
