Project title
Structure and function of proteins building the inner colon mucus layer that separates bacteria from the epithelium and hinders inflammation
Job assignments
The mucus that covers our mucosal surfaces is an intimate part of the innate immune system and the first line of defense against microbial challenges. The microbial challenge is most prominent in the distal parts of the intestine, where the inner mucus layer acts as a protective physical barrier, impermeable to bacteria. In the absence of MUC2, as well as in other spontaneous colitis models and inflamed ulcerative colitis patients bacteria reach the epithelium and can cause activation of the immune system, inflammation, diarrhea, and subsequently cancer development.
Molecular details regarding how this protective system works and is regulated is an unexplored research area that has emerged from our discovery of an mucus layer limiting bacterial contact with the epithelium. Renewal and regulation of the mucus layer will be studied in mice models. The contribution of several abundant proteins found in the mucus will be studied. Among these are t he ZG16 and FCGBP protein, but especially the CLCA1 protein. The importance of these proteins in the process of forming functional inner mucus layer will be the focus for the studies. The project will contribute to the development of new treatment strategies for patients suffering from intestinal inflammation as ulcerative colitis.
PhD positions are financed mainly through education grants during the first two years and employment as doctoral students during the last two years and pertains to a doctoral degree.
Eligibility
The general entry requirements are fulfilled if you have either 1, a second cycle degree (usually described as a masters degree) or 2, completed courses at an academic level corresponding to at least 240 education credits. At least 60 of these credits must be at second cycle level. 60 credits is equal to one year of full-time studies. You also need to fulfill the specific entry requirements which is an English language requirement; Engelska B.
Assessment
After the application deadline has passed, an initial assessment of the candidates eligibility is made at the faculty office and sent to the project supervisor for selection. The process can then take up to 6 months before a candidate is selected.
