Project title
The immune system in neonatal brain injury: molecular mechanisms and novel targets for treatment
Job assignments
The successful applicant will work in a research group, which was the first to show that stimulation of toll-like receptors contributes to brain injury in the newborn. Toll-like receptors are a family of novel detectors of both bacterial and viral infections and we have shown that they are expressed in the developing brain and can make the brain more vulnerable to injury. The overall goal of the research is to identify new strategies for treatment of brain injury in infants. We believe that modulation of toll-like receptors may be a fruitful strategy as babies that develop brain injury often have infections. The specific aims of the PhD project are to investigate how toll-like receptors affect blood-brain-barrier permeability and inflammatory cells in the brain. Further, the brain protective potential of novel peptides, which modulate the immune system, will be tested. These studies are very timely as there is presently no pharmacological trea tment available for babies that have an increased risk of developing permanent neurological damage.
The doctoral student will be part of an excellent scientific environment with both basic science and clinical expertise in neuroscience and perinatology. He/she will have an opportunity to learn and work with animal models such as gene knockout mice. Moreover, he/she will learn immmunohistochemistry, qRT-PCR, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy and cell culture.
PhD positions are financed mainly through education grants during the first two years and employment as doctoral students during the last two years and pertains to a doctoral degree
Eligibility
The general entry requirements are fulfilled if you have either 1, a second cycle degree (usually described as a masters degree) or 2, completed courses at an academic level corresponding to at least 240 education credits.
