Project title
Clinical, physiological and biochemical characterization of circulating Troponin T
Job assignments
Defining a patient as having the diagnosis acute myocardial infarction strongly relies on the level and change of the cardiac damage marker cardiac troponin T (cTnT), especially when the ECG is indecisive, i.e. lacks ST-segment elevation (NSTEMI). In addition, a stably elevated TnT level is a strong risk factor for death and heart failure irrespectively of the underlying cTnT elevating condition. To be able to provide these high-risk patients with appropriate treatment we must first understand the mechanism behind these cTnT elevations.
In this proposal we will study circulating cTnT to find ways to distinguish chronic cTnT release from acute myocardial injury with the overall aim to develop methods that could aid in the diagnosis of NSTEMI and to understand why TnT sometimes is chronically elevated and its link to death and development of heart failure. 1. To understand why cTnT often is elevated in kidney failure and in older patients we will study the release and clearance of cTnT using embryonic stem cell derived cardiomyocytes and a rat model of kidney dependent clearance. 2. We will examine if other biomarkers such as copeptin, hFABP, miR-499 or high-sensitive Troponin I can be used to exclude NSTEMI or add prognostic information in patients with slight cTnT elevations. 3. We will examine if cTnT with long or short circulation time can be separated as a way to distinguish stable cTnT elevations from acute myocardial injury.
PhD positions are financed mainly through education grants during the first two years and employment as doctoral students during the last two years and pertains to a docotral degree

At least 60 of these credits must be at second cycle level. 60 credits is equal to one year of full-time studies. You also need to fulfill the specific entry requirements which is an English language requirement; Engelska B.
