Students learning in nursing through educational drama as a teaching method. A study in the nursing programme and specialist nursing paediatric care programme, on ground and advanced level
Job assignments
The project's overall aim is to develop a didactic method for using drama in education that can be applied to promote students' learning process in the nursing and specialist nursing programme.
With the intention to develop the nursing profession with focus on person-centered care, it seems necessary that education of future nurses and specialist nurses notice and highlights how different care situations can be understood from the perspective of individuals. Drama in education has the unique potential to offer learning with clear changes of perspectives, which allows the students to integrate the thought-feeling-action.
Traditional teaching involves often only thoughts, which does not similarly contribute to awareness, commitment and empathy. It is important that prospective nurses, specialist nurses and leaders in health care are well prepared, based on a holistic and ethical approach in care encounters. Especially regarding conflicts and ethical dilemmas involving patients, families and staff.
The project consists of four studies including both descriptive and exploratory design. Research questions for the project are about:
• To identify critical health events based on clinical care situations focusing on the care relationship, and examine and describe how health care situations can be used for learning through drama in education.
• To strengthen students' learning process in professional career development.
• What enables student learning with drama as a teaching method and how progression is related to professional growth?
• How learning with drama can contribute to increased preparedness of students and to increase security in the care relationship in the encounter with the patient and relatives, and to understand and apply the meaning of person-centered care?
PhD positions are financed mainly through education grants during the first two years and employment as doctoral students during the last two years and pertains to a doctoral degree.
Eligibility
The general entry requirement is fulfilled if you have either 1, a second cycle degree (usually described as a masters degree) or 2, completed courses at an academic level corresponding to at least 240 credits. At least 60 of these credits (corresponding to 1 year of full-time studies) must be at second cycle level. You also need to fulfill the specific entry requirement which is an English proficiency requirement equal to the Swedish course Engelska B.
Assessment
After the application deadline has passed, an initial assessment of the candidates eligibility is made at the faculty office and sent to the project supervisor for selection. The process can then take up to 6 months before a candidate is selected.
