Ph.D. student
based at the Department of Biomedical Engineering
Duties: A doctoral student should mainly work on the doctoral studies. A PhD candidate may, within certain limits, also work with teaching and administration. Before the doctoral studies have been concluded, such assignments should not represent more than 20 percent of full time work.
This Ph.D. project is devoted to Systems Biology, which in this context means that mathematical modelling is used as an integrated tool for data analysis in ordinary experimental biology. The focus of the Ph.D. student will be on the modelling side, but some experiments are possible to include as well, if so desired. The main biological system will be insulin signalling in primary human adipocytes, including their role in type 2 diabetes, but other experimental systems, such as yeast, will also be studied. Such simpler systems will primarily be used for development and early checking of new theoretical methods, which also is an important part of the project. The student is expected to have previous experience of modelling and of collaborations with experimentalists, but previous experience regarding both method development and biological questions is considered as a strength. The student is expected to take part in teaching, which involves supervision of undergraduate students in courses and thesis writing. Finally, the project includes a strong international facet, and a substantial part of the time will be spent in other universities, particularly in Freiburg, Germany.
