Honey bee - Varroa mite co-adaptations
Using honey bees (Apis mellifera) and the external parasitic mite, Varroa destructor, the main objective of this program is to study the host-parasite co-adaptation in a population of honey bees surviving such mite infestations in Sweden. The aim is to understand the mechanisms behind honey bee tolerance to V. destructor infestations and to investigate if this information can be used for breeding more mite tolerant honey bee colonies. The work includes field studies of the population dynamics of both the host and the parasite and also laboratory studies of mite reproduction. Furthermore, the association between the varroa mite and other pathogens will be investigated. Thus, the work includes laboratory diagnosis of honey bee pathogens using both microscopy and molecular tools.
Qualifications: Do you have an interest in honey bees and their diseases and parasites? Do you have a Master degree in biology or an equivalent education? Then we may be looking for you! You should be independent with an analytical capacity and have an interest in epidemiological issues with focus on host-parasite co-adaptations. It is important that you like to work in the field and have a good ability to establish and maintain contacts both within the research community and with the public. A driver's licence is a must. Knowledge and experience from practical work with honey bees is a definite advantage, as are documented abilities in both spoken and written English.

Those who met the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 120 credits or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of 2015."
Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
