hela Sverige The department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology (SBT) forms part of the Faculty of Forest Sciences, has about 50 employees and is located in both Umeå and Uppsala. The department carries out high quality research and under- and postgraduate education on a high international level and collaborates with society and industry to develop a bio-based economy where forest biomaterials are an important resource. The major focus in Umeå lies on value chains in the bio-based industry, where different components of forest biomaterials are collected, characterized, separated, modified / processed, used and re-used cost-effectively for different purposes while forest ecosystem services are managed sustainably. In Uppsala, the focus lies on wood science and technology with research and education on wood materials from nano to macro levels and with accredited testing of wood products and treatments for the market. The department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology, SLU, Umeå, is a scientifically stimulating working environment with a deep knowledge on aquatic and terrestrial ecology.
Description
The aim of this PhD project is to study biochemical composition of micro and macroalgae grown both in natural water and in wastewater from industries and in municipal wastewater.
The work will include algal growth and evaluation of wastewater treatment effects both at lab scale as well as in semi-industrial scale. Biochemical characterization of macromolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids and proteins will be performed using traditional techniques as well as more advance chemical imaging. Studies on nutrients uptake and removal from wastewater will be an important part of the work.
Qualification
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate within the fields of algae biology, and microbiology. The requested experimental skills include a solid background in biotechnology. Previous experiences with microbiological methods including biochemical characterization of micro and macroalgae using traditional methods and chemical imaging and the growth of algae or cyanobacteria are of advantage. A very good knowledge of English, both written and spoken is requested. A basic knowledge of Swedish is desired. Driving license is also a wished requirement.

A person has basic eligibility for third cycle education if he or she has taken a second cycle qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle education. Upper secondary school grades equivalent to English B/English 6 are a basic requirement.
Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dessertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
