Research education within the field of Migration, Urbanization and Social Change, MUSA
Migration and urbanization are both results of and driving forces in on-going societal change. As a research area, MUSA comprises the subjects of Urban Studies and International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER). The third-cycle education is conducted in cooperation with the Department of Urban Studies and the Department of Global Political Studies. See http://www.mah.se/english/faculties/Faculty-of-Culture-and-Society/Research/Doctoral-Studies/Research-areas/Migration-Urbanisation-and-Societal-Change/

Third-Cycle Education in International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER)
The subject of IMER rests on a multi- and inter-disciplinary basis, and as a research subject IMER focuses on population movements between countries and on ethnic relations in countries of origin and recipient countries resulting from these movements. This area thus includes emigration, immigration and remigration. IMER deals with the national, regional, international and global effects and consequences of migration for both societies of origin and recipient societies at structural, institutional, group and individual levels. These are effects emerging clearly in various urban contexts. In these contexts, ethnic and religious relations during one or several generations increasingly characterize today?s society.

Employment as a Ph.D. Student
Those who are employed as Ph.D. students shall primarily devote themselves to their own research education. Directives about employing Ph.D. students are found in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1-7. Those employed are expected to participate actively in the research and teaching environment, which may include departmental duties, primarily teaching, at a maximum of 20 percent, for which compensation time is given.

The aim of third-cycle education is to develop the knowledge and skills required to enable the Ph.D. student to independently conduct research and thereby contribute to knowledge development in the subject area chosen. The third-cycle programme comprises 240 higher education credits (corresponding to four years? full-time study) and is concluded by publicly defending a printed doctoral dissertation.
The Ph.D. Student position is linked to the project Hate crime ? a challenge to democracy? A multidisciplinary study of hate crime in Skåne with a focus on causes, consequences and support initiatives. The project is financed by the Swedish Research Council and is placed at the Malmö Institute for Studies of Migration, Diversity and Welfare (MIM). The Ph.D. student will be offered to work on questionnaire materials produced within the project.
