hela Sverige Malmö University, located in the centre of Malmö, is an innovative, urban, and international institute of higher education, with about 1800 employees and 24000 students. Research and education at the University are characterised by the urgent demands of contemporary society - to contribute to sustainability and equality, based in rigorous science, in close co-operation with external partners and stakeholders, prioritising and addressing the challenges of the future. Faculty and students work collaboratively to acquire, share, and disseminate knowledge, in order to understand, explain and develop societal circumstances - locally as well as globally.
Faculty
The Faculty of Technology and society (TS) offers educations and research in computer science and media technology as well as engineering, natural sciences and applied mathematics. A characteristic of our research and teaching is the engagement of companies and other organizations as active participants.
Department
At the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology, currently around 60 lecturers, researchers and professors from 20 different countries are employed.
At the department, the research is devoted to the digitalization of our society, and a special area of attention is the Internet of Things, where we mainly investigate the usefulness and human use of the connected devices in our surroundings. Other research areas that our researchers investigate are, e.g., software engineering, intelligent transport systems, and computational media. Apart from a strong cooperation with the industry and with several research organizations, such as the Internet of Things and People Research Center, Software Center, and the Swedish Knowledge Center for Public Transport, our researchers actively take part in research projects with universities around the world.
Job description and responsibilities
Research context
The research project is conducted in close collaboration with industry and in the context of Software Center at Malmö University. Software Center is a collaboration between twelve software-intensive companies and five Swedish universities with the mission to accelerate the adoption of novel approaches to software engineering and to improve the digitalization capability.
Research focus
In our on-going research, we focus primarily on how to use data from customers and from products in the field to increase the effectiveness of software development in companies. As part of our Software Center research collaboration, we work closely with companies in the embedded systems domain. In addition, and to accelerate knowledge sharing between domains, we collaborate with a number of companies in the online domain.
This PhD position focuses on how to use data to increase effectiveness of software development and improve delivery of customer value. This involves:
• An understanding of how to systematize data collection, processing and analysis for the purpose of experimentation and data driven decision-making in an organization
• Exploration of how to improve quality, increase trustworthiness and ensure accuracy of data in organizations
• Identify and define relevant metrics to ensure continuous delivery of customer value.
In addition, we look to extend and broaden our on-going research by increasingly exploring areas such as:
• Use of data in relation to the assessment of, and value exchange with, external partners in the business ecosystem
• Use of data for improving empowerment and autonomy of teams
The PhD student will work closely with industry and is expected to spend time at the partner companies in Software Center. This involves planning, execution and evaluation of collaborative research projects but also tangible, hands-on work and interactions with the different companies. Our research is primarily qualitative with interview studies, focus groups and observation techniques as techniques for data collection. However, we value skills in quantitative research methods and analysis as well as high technical expertise as our work involves the entire cycle of problem exploration and definition - development of solution - validation of solution.
Employment as a Ph. D. Student
An employed Ph.D. student shall primarily devote time to his/her own research training. Teaching assignments of up to 20% may be part of your duties. Regulations regarding employment of Ph.D. students can be found in Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 1-7 §§. The Ph.D. student is expected to actively participate in the research and teaching environment.
The aim of the Ph.D. programme is to develop the knowledge and skills required for the Ph.D. student to independently conduct research and thereby contribute to the development of knowledge within the project. The Ph.D. programme is worth 240 higher education credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies).
