Ph.D. student in condensed matter theory with focus on nanomagnetism and/or quantum transport in nanostructures
The School of Pure and Applied Natural Sciences seeks a Ph.D. student in theoretical condensed matter physics. The research will be carried out at the Division of Physics of the University of Kalmar
( http://www.kob.hik.se/fysik ) in collaboration with the Nanometer Structure Consortium at Lund University ( http://nano.lth.se/ ). The Ph.D. student will also have the possibility of collaboration and support within the recently established NordForsk Center for Nanospintronics ( http://www.kob.hik.se/fysik/nordforsk) , which is coordinated by the physics group at the University of Kalmar.
The research will be carried out within one of the research areas presently investigated in the condensed matter theory group. They include magnetism in nanoclusters, spin-dependent transport through ferromagnetic metal nanoparticles, molecular magnets and semiconductor nanostructures; inelastic electron tunnel spectroscopy in nanostructures by magnons and phonons.
The study program is 4 years full-time. During the first two years the Ph.D. position will be paid by a post-graduate study scholarship (“utbildningsbidrag”) and during the final two years by a salary.
Basic requirements Applicants should have a Masters Degree (240hp/240ECTS) in theoretical physics, preferably with a thesis relevant to the proposed research areas. A background that combines both analytical and computational skills is advantageous. An important condition for successful studies is the ability to work independently. The candidate should have a solid command of the English language. Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 7.

Union representatives may be contacted via the university switchboard at +46 (0)480-446000.
Application should be addressed to the registrar at the address: Registrator, University of Kalmar, S-391 82 Kalmar, Sweden, and should arrive no later than April 16, 2009. Mark your application with reference number 2009/228.
The application (in English) shall include a short description of yourself and why you are interested in doing a Ph.D., a CV, official transcripts of exams and grades, names and addresses of at least three referees (incl. phone and e-mail), a copy of the Masters thesis (or an extended summary in English if the thesis is not written in this language) and other possible publications.
