Forest regeneration of broadleaved trees in N Sweden
This project investigates the natural regeneration of broadleaved trees in N Sweden, and how broadleaved trees respond to varying environmental conditions. The majority of trees planted after logging operations are coniferous and the elimination of fire from boreal forests have caused broadleaves to decline in the landscape. However, there is an increasing interest in the use of broadleaved trees from production, recreational, and environmental perspectives. Previous recent work on the regeneration of broadleaved trees has been conducted mainly in southern Sweden, and there is lack of the basic knowledge about what factors govern successful regeneration of broadleaves in the northern boreal zone. This studentship will involve investigating: (1) the role of ground layer vegetation and disturbance on regeneration of broadleaved tree species in boreal forests (eg. Betula, Populus, Sorbus and Salix); (2) the ‘after-life’ effects of broadleaved trees on soil properties and regeneration of conifers; (3) the response of broadleaved trees to external factors such as defoliation, fertilization and disturbance (drought, fire); and (4) the emergence and establishment of broadleaved trees along an ecological fertility gradient. This work will be performed through both field- and glasshouse experiments. The position will be based at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management in Umeå, and the PhD-student will be part of the newly started Research School "Sustainable Management and Utilization of Forests".
Qualifications
Qualifications for this position is a MSc in Biology or Forestry. Writing skills in English is necessary.

Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
