Job description Ph.D. programme in Computer Science
More and more data is generated by things connected to the Internet (IoT devices). The current standard solution is that all this data is sent to the cloud to be processed and stored there. This has some advantages, but also many disadvantages, such as, delays, communication costs, server bottlenecks, security and robustness problems, and integrity issues. An alternative is to process the data (or part of it) in the connected devices or local gateways. This is often called edge (or fog) computing and is based on the fact that the connected devices are becoming more powerful. In addition, there are hybrid solutions, where some processing and storage of data occurs locally in the connected devices and some parts in cloud servers, which may preferred in some applications.

This PhD project includes the investigation and development of:

• guidelines for when cloud, edge or hybrid IoT solutions should be used, and

• new system architectures and methods for edge-based and hybrid IoT solutions.
