The job requires everything from cooking, cleaning, packing, carrying, and light physical therapy, to assistance with toileting, bathing and dressing. Many caregivers help people who are inactive; Thomas is very active. You will help him with everything from simple handiwork to navigating bureaucracy, and quickly learn to efficiently assist with whatever projects he is working on.
Tom is a father of adult children. In the 90s he created Sweden's biggest rock radio station, and was a pioneer of streaming music. He is also an award-winning filmmaker, a writer, an epic adventurer, and an inventor. Currently he is on Palawan where he founded a small orphanage before becoming paralyzed from the neck down last year (the result of an old motorcycle accident). He now requires help with most daily activities.
The successful applicant may be a female, and will probably be 25 to 50 years of age. Critical for this job however is not a specific age or gender, but a positive attitude and youthful energy. You also need to have a strong work ethic, solid organizational skills, and a genuine eagerness to learn. You need to be in good shape because assisting a paralyzed person is occasionally physically taxing. And caregiving is emotionally taxing, so you must be stable; no drama. And you have no other responsibilities that could inhibit traveling. Driving license, caregiving history, computer skills, travel experience, and affection for dogs are pluses.
Although competent caregiving is a critical part of the job, this is not a typical PA position; this is more of a 'working adventure'.
