Our New Modalities Chemistry team within Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity (RIA), leads the efforts focused on growing the use of novel peptide and oligonucleotide-based modalities and molecular conjugates in the treatment of respiratory diseases. We do this in close collaboration with scientists in the Chemistry, Bioscience, DMPK and Pharmaceutical Sciences departments - all joined by the goal to discover the respiratory medicines of the future.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
You will be part of a team of scientists dedicated to discovering drugs based on peptide and oligonucleotide chemistry. As an authority in the field of oligonucleotides you will contribute to specific RIA projects, including management of external resources and collaborations.
You are expected to lead from the bench, directly influencing the design of novel chemical entities by highlighting opportunities built up by recent scientific progress within oligonucleotide focused chemistry. The role includes acting as a chemistry lead in RIA oligonucleotide projects and to provide expert advice in the interpretation of complex data.
You will work in a multidisciplinary environment and mentor less experienced co-workers, which requires excellent interpersonal skills.
We expect you to:
* Actively impact the RIA projects to ensure that state of the art synthetic oligonucleotide chemistry methods and design approaches are used
* Dedicatedly and visibly influence oligonucleotide drug discovery efforts in individual projects - role-modelled by own experimental work
* Drive our scientific reputation by identifying and progressing publication opportunities internally, across AZ and together with external organizations
Essential Requirements
We believe that you have an excellent scientific background with strong written and oral communication skills. In addition, you possess an ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with a can-do attitude and a clear delivery focus.
* PhD in (bio-)organic chemistry
* Professional experience in a relevant field focused on oligonucleotide chemistry
* In-depth knowledge of recent developments in oligonucleotide chemistry
* Knowledge of areas relevant to oligonucleotide based medicinal chemistry drug discovery
* Experience from pharmaceutical drug discovery of oligonucleotide drug candidates
