The Environment, Safety & Health Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a position as Group Leader of the Occupational Health & Safety Group.

Description of directorate/division
The Environment, Safety & Health (ESH) Division, reporting to the Associate Director of ESH and Quality supports, monitors and assures the implementation of ESS policies, rules, processes, objectives as well as best practices at all levels of the organisation in ESH matters. In order to start preparing for the commissioning of the ESS facility as well as for the future operation, the ESH division has since July 1st 2017 been re-organized forming two groups: the Radiation Protection (RP) Group and the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Group. For both these groups, ESS has opened up new positions as Group Leaders. Presently, the ESH Division is a team of 13 persons. Four (4) of them are in the OHS Group. The group will substantially expand its staff and activities in the upcoming years in order to meet the needs of the organisation.

Description of the position
For the installation, commissioning and operation of the ESS facility, the OHS group is the expertise unit at ESS for OHS issues, responsible for stimulating risk assessment culture in compliance with regulations and internal rules regarding all work environment issues for staff, users and visitors. The OHS group manage the ESS OHS committee (as secretary and deputy chairman).

During the design and installation of the ESS Machine, the OHS Group is responsible for

• Development of rules, procedure & guidelines concerning all OHS issues. This includes Electrical Safety, Fire & Explosive Safety (handling of dangerous goods), Chemical Safety and safe handling of equipment (lifts, cranes, rotating machines)
• Supporting the installation of the accelerator, target and the neutron scattering instruments made by ESS and its in-kind partners
• Establish the rules & procedures for the external rescue service, including contacts with the local authorities
• Development of an Emergency Preparedness Program

You are expected to be an active and driving contributor in the ESH&Q management team.

Required competencies:

• Master of Science or Master of Engineering in a relevant area
• Experience of risk assessments and analyses of work environment issues for a large-scale scientific facility.
• Management experience (project or line organization) from medium sized teams
• Experience from working in project/line matrix organizations and experience from estimation, planning, resource allocation and execution of project work

Your English skills need to be very good in both verbal and written form. Experience of working in an international collaborative environment would be an asset. To be successful and perform well in this position you are a result-oriented problem solver with a strong commitment to quality. You have a collaborative mindset and enjoy contributing to and driving a dynamic team.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months' initial probationary period; the position is to be filled as soon as possible. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
