Blykalla is scaling quickly in order to industrialize our small modular reactor (SMR) concept. If you are passionate about nuclear technology and want to make a significant impact, join us!
Are you a systems thinker with a passion for solving complex nuclear backend challenges? We're looking for a Nuclear Back-End Management Engineer that will play a vital role in Blykalla's strategy and delivery for radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management. Join us as we bring Sweden's first small modular reactor to life - and shape how we manage its legacy with technical, regulatory, and economic foresight.
What we do at Blykalla
Blykalla is a Swedish deep-tech company at the forefront of the nuclear industry, pioneering the development of advanced small modular reactors that can provide clean, safe, and reliable energy. Thanks to lead-cooling, we achieve high safety in a very compact format, allowing for simple and cost-effective design that can be mass-produced. Our unique reactor design will provide safe and green baseload energy that perfectly complements solar and wind power.
What you'll get to do
As a Nuclear Back-End Management Engineer, you will play a vital role to find feasible treatment methods and disposal routes for radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel from Blykalla's SEALER reactors. Waste management is covered by extensive frameworks and demonstrating compliances is a cornerstone of nuclear licensing.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about finding sustainable and economical ways to manage spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste and wants to make a difference in an innovative environment. You will work closely with more experienced nuclear engineers and support our design team and nuclear safety team.
Key Responsibilities
You will play a vital role in defining and delivering Blykallas approach to spent nuclear fuel and radio active waste management - spanning technical feasibility, regulatory engagement.
Define and evaluate treatment, classification and disposal solutions for low, intermediate- and high-level waste
Coordinate feasibility studies on direct disposal, pre-treatment, or reprocessing of uranium nitride fuel
Identify opportunities and methods to minimize volumes and complexity of the waste through design and material solutions, process optimization and reprocessing and reuse of materials
Interface with Swedish and international partners, as well as national regulators
Contribute to the broader deployment of strategy for Blykallas SMRs ensuring Back-End readiness aligns with reactor timelines
Contribute to writing technical reports and feasibility studies for licensing, design decisions, and strategic planning
Support and produce waste management documentation for our SEALER reactors and licensing processes
Review waste related documentation and other related documentation
Stay updated on development in waste management and integrate them were appropriate
Stay updated on regulatory changes in Back-End and integrate them into Blykalla documentation

Who you are
You're a strategic doer - comfortable working across technical, regulatory, and organizational boundaries. You understand that nuclear waste and spent fuel is not just a technical challenge but also a matter of public trust and long-term accountability. You communicate clearly, plan proactively, and keep progress moving even when the answers aren't all there yet. You are confident presenting in high- profile settings - whether at regulatory meetings, or expert workshops - and can translate complexity into clarity. You're curious, pragmatic, and motivated by impact - ready to help build something that lasts.
Qualifications
Background in nuclear engineering, nuclear chemistry, waste management, or a related technical field
Experience with radioactive waste and/or spent fuel management-ideally including advanced fuels or non-standard reactor systems
Strong coordination and communication skills-comfortable presenting to stakeholders and cross-functional audiences
Familiarity with Swedish nuclear regulatory frameworks (e.g., SSM, SKB) and international guidance (e.g., IAEA, WENRA, OECD NEA)
Fluent in English in speech and writing. Swedish is a nice-to-have but not a must
Eligible to work with nuclear materials and in nuclear organizations in Sweden

The following will be considered a plus:
Exposure to waste transport regulations and infrastructure (e.g., packaging, logistics, acceptance criteria)
Familiarity with regulatory or standards-based documentation (SAR), even if indirectly (e.g., coursework requiring structured report writing).
Experience in a leadership role (e.g., project lead, task coordination, or external interface)
Experience with cost modeling, funding mechanisms, or backend liability planning

Location
This position is for our office in Stockholm.
So, what do you think?
Become part of a team that's transforming nuclear energy and building a sustainable future. Together, we'll deliver safe, clean, and reliable power to the world.
We are proud to foster an inclusive workplace free from discrimination. We strongly believe that diversity of experience, perspectives, and background will lead to a better environment for our employees and a better product.
