Do you like to push the boundaries of science?
We are looking for a Medicinal Chemist with the drive to explore new scientific approaches, in an open and collaborative environment, to influence the design and discovery of the drugs of the future.
The Company
AstraZeneca is a global, science-led biopharmaceutical company that focuses on the discovery, development, and commercialization of prescription medicines for some of the world's most serious diseases. We are proud to have a unique workplace culture that inspires innovation and collaboration. At AstraZeneca, employees are empowered to be creative and express diverse perspectives - and are valued, energized and rewarded for their ideas and creativity.
You will be part of the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases (CVMD) department within Innovative Medicines biotech unit (IMED). We have the ambition to discover groundbreaking treatments for patients suffering from cardiovascular, metabolic, and chronic kidney diseases. The Medicinal Chemistry Department within the CVMD IMED is a critical player in identifying novel targets and discovering chemistry to target them. You will have the opportunity to ask, and to address, scientific questions in an innovative way and be part of a stimulating environment for you as a medicinal chemist.
As a Medicinal Chemist, you will be skilled in synthetic organic chemistry and you will expand your knowledge of drug discovery to related scientific disciplines. This is a senior scientific lab-based role, in which you will work in multiple projects across the CVMD IMED, in all phases from target selection to drug candidate selection. The role holder will also provide discipline-based scientific expertise and could represent the department and AstraZeneca at interdisciplinary meetings internally, as well as internationally.
Experience
Ideally, you have a PhD degree in organic chemistry with post-doctoral research experience in synthetic organic chemistry directed towards biologically active molecules. It is important that you are a team player and have excellent collaboration skills. You will have the ability to operate effectively in a multidisciplinary matrix research environment, where you will provide expertise in synthetic organic chemistry.
Key Skills
* Retro-synthetic analysis, route optimization, and delivery of novel compounds for biological testing, typically in the scale of 50 mg to 1 g
* Knowledge and application of new innovations in the field of organic synthesis including e.g. C-H activation, Late Stage Functionalization, miniaturization and automation, flow chemistry, photochemistry, electrochemistry, and biocatalysis
* Solid experience of using chemistry software tools, both for documentation and prediction
* Communication of science through high quality publications and conference presentations
* The role could include management of external collaborations and contract labs
* Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral
* Highly self-motivated team player
