The Scientific Activities Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Mechanical Technician for Scientific Instrumentation.

Description of division

The Scientific Activities Division (SAD), is responsible for the support laboratories, sample environment and user office at the ESS. During the ESS construction phase, SAD is building the infrastructure and technical competence to operate the equipment that will control parameters such as pressure, temperature, magnetic and other fields during neutron experiments.

Description of main responsibilities

You will be working closely with scientists, engineers and other technicians to carry out the following responsibilities:

• Working collaboratively within a team of scientists, engineers and technicians to develop, maintain and operate scientific instrumentation e.g. sample environment equipment for high pressures and mechanical processing. There will be a particular focus on specialised ultra-high-pressure systems spanning pressures from 1000 to 1000000 bar.
• Mechanical assembly, testing, calibration and maintenance of diverse scientific equipment.
• Problem solving within the ever-changing environment of a complex scientific construction project.
• Active participation in safety aspects for workshop spaces and for equipment, including high-pressure devices.
• Management of a workshop space, including procurement of equipment and consumables.
• Machine work, including use of lathes, milling machines and similar tasks, accurately and at short notice
• Basic technical design, and interfacing with local engineers and external workshops

Qualifications

You have successfully completed a mechanical technical training and at least 3 years of experience in a work environment requiring similar skills. Experience in machine shop work is required with a high regard for precision and quality of workmanship. Experience of scientific instrumentation in particular in the field of high-pressure systems, both gas and hydraulic, would be an advantage.

You are self-motivated, organised and have an ability to work independently to tight deadlines. This position requires a practical approach and a willingness to learn new techniques across a wide variety of projects. You have excellent communication skills, and will be an effective part of a team with diverse backgrounds and competences. Experience of working in an international environment is essential. Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of Swedish is an advantage.

ESS is currently a construction project, but will become a user-oriented facility catering to external scientists, therefore a commitment to good service and understanding the needs of others is essential. There will be opportunities for training, with the possibility of some working time abroad. Our work environment is characterised by fast growth, high rate of work, and an international atmosphere with highly academic personnel. You must therefore enjoy the diversity of such and have a personality suited for the challenges it holds. It is foreseen that during commissioning, early operations and later, occasional shift work (including nights and weekends) and scheduled on-call service will be required.

What ESS can offer

ESS can offer you a variety of things, such as passionate colleagues, a vibrant melting pot of diversity, and a challenging and high paced work environment where our employees take great pride in designing and building a world leading facility for materials research.

If you were to join ESS, you would become an important piece of the puzzle, since all our skilled staff are needed in order to fulfill the overall mission. We value and need expertise, innovative minds, great ways of leading and interacting with others, and the ability to work with people regardless of culture and background.
