SIT, in Finspång, is now seeking for a:

M.Sc. student to complete a Master thesis project in modelling of field experience data

Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB (SIT AB) in Sweden is part of the Siemens Energy Sector. The Energy Sector is the world?s leading supplier of products, services and solutions for the generation, transmission and distribution of power and for the extraction, conversion and transport of oil and gas. SIT AB delivers gas turbines, steam turbines, turn-key power plants, service and components for heat and power production. All under one roof ? from research and development, manufacturing, marketing, sales and installation of turbines and complete power plants to service and refurbishing. There are today about 2 700 employees in Finspång.

What does the Master thesis project entail?

The project is a part of efforts done to establish a new process to systematically collect, analyze, model, interpret and deliver the aforementioned knowledge to the users within different functions in the company. The focus is to tackle some of key challenges like highly censored observations and few failed components. Following directions / topics are considered:

Make a literature survey of survival models applicable to our heavily censored dataset. The dataset is stored in an SQL-database and can be summarized in a table with ~ 0.4 M rows with observations on individual components, with about ~40 attributes per row.

Correlate / verify current estimations of the component lifetime (obtained by the lab tests and calculations) with the collected filed observations. E.g. quantify the influence of the fuel type on the component lifetime.

Explore and test several methods for parameter ranking by their importance and group parameters representing similar information (factor analysis).

What do I need to qualify for this job?

You are a M.Sc. student in computer science / data mining / statistics or equal.

You are driven, ambitious and prepared to work hard.

You have good skills in English language, both in speech and writing.

Good knowledge of data mining models for life sciences (Weibull analysis, Bayesian statistics, etc.) is preferable.

Good knowledge in R programming and familiarity with SQL querying language is a plus.

What else do I need to know?

The proposed work covers 30 hp and is to be performed at office Dalen in Finspång by up to 2 students during January - July 2016.
