Master Thesis Matrix cooling
Are you a master student planning to write your Master Grade during Spring 2021?
Join us on our journey #SiemensEnergy
More than 90,000 employees around the world are passionately pursuing one common goal: to energize society with affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy systems.
Join our great team and put your energy to use.
By making sustainable energy solutions more cost-effective, developing new technology for the smart industry of the future and electrifying passenger and freight transport, we make our vision of a sustainable world a reality.

We are now looking for a student to take on the assignment
Investigation and Optimization of the cooling performance of a matrix cooling scheme
The assignment:
To meet the required lifetime of blades and vanes in the turbine hot gas path, different cooling techniques must be used to decrease the metal temperature. One of the more commonly used cooling techniques is the so called "Matrix Cooling" or "Vortex Cooling". This method has the additional benefit of increasing the structural robustness of the component which makes it a favorite in many cooling designs within the gas turbine industry.

Flow visualization has shown that there is little flow mixing between the pressure and suction side channels, but these experiments have usually been performed for idealized geometries and without taking for example effects of rotation into account. Generally thermal modelling has been performed using a coupled flow network approach but nowadays CFD is also often used as a design tool.
In this work we want the student to help us to learn more about the flow in the matrix cooling system using a commercial CFD tool.
To understand the flow physics in the matrix better
To propose how to model the matrix using CFD to capture the heat transfer accurate enough
To investigate how different design parameters affect the heat transfer in the matrix

These investigations will then be used to improve the guideline how to model matrix cooling systems using CFD and to improve the methods in the in-house codes currently used to design and predict the metal temperature.

Your Profile:
• Student at MSc level with focus in mechanical engineering and flow physics
Have good knowledge about fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer and CFD.
Is structured and can communicate well.
Who can find own ways and solutions to challenges

Why should you be working at Siemens?
Siemens Energy is one of the world's leading energy technology companies. The company works with its customers and partners on energy systems for the future, thus supporting the transition to a more sustainable world. With its portfolio of products, solutions and services, Siemens Energy covers almost the entire energy value chain - from power generation and transmission to storage. The portfolio includes conventional and renewable energy technology, such as gas and steam turbines, hybrid power plants operated with hydrogen, and power generators and transformers. More than 50 percent of the portfolio has already been decarbonized. A majority stake in the listed company Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) makes Siemens Energy a global market leader for renewable energies. An estimated one-sixth of the electricity generated worldwide is based on technologies from Siemens Energy. Siemens Energy employs 91,000 people worldwide in more than 90 countries and generated revenue of around EUR29 billion in fiscal year 2019. In Sweden Siemens Energy has 2600 employees in 10 locations.
At Siemens we value diversity by inclusion and by cooperating with people with different mindset, background, experience, competence and personal traits - in all organisational levels.
