Are you a master student planning to write your Master Thesis during spring 2020? Join us on our journey into the future #Siemens

Be part of an open and dynamic workplace where professional and personal development is high on the agenda. By making sustainable energy solutions more cost effective, developing new technologies for the future's smart industry and electrifying passenger and freight transport, we make reality of our vision of a sustainable world.

We are now looking for a student to take on the assignment "Characterization of materials manufactures by additive manufacturing."

The assignment:

Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB has worked with additive manufacturing for several years and is today one of the pioneers in the area. Additive manufacturing is used as a complement to the traditional production methods, and is not just limited to rapid prototyping, but also used for serial manufacturing.

Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB is using one of the additive manufacturing techniques, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), also known as selective laser melting (SLM) or direct metal laser sintering (DMLS). The material is produced layer by layer with a laser as the energy source. The techniques could be used to produce different kinds of stainless steels, titanium alloys, tool steels, but also superalloys.

Materials manufactured by additive manufacturing present a different microstructure than the one usually found in traditionally manufactured materials.

Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB continuously develops new materials and new processes This master thesis project is part of the ongoing to study these materials and understand these processes.

* The first part of the master thesis project will consist of a literature study to become familiar with 3D printing processes and high temperature alloys that are available for additive manufacturing.
* The second and main part of the master thesis project will be carried out at our materials laboratory. Different additive manufactured materials will be characterized and examined through sample preparation and microscopy examination. The effect of different post processing steps, such as heat treatment, on the microstructure of the material will be analyzed and mapped.
* Finally, all the results and discoveries will be described in a written report and presented to the Siemens community.

Your Profile:
* Student of master's degree in materials science, mechanical engineering or similar.
* Knowledge about materials/metals for 3D printing is meritorious but not mandatory.
* A well-driven person with a problem-solving mindset.
* Good English language skills are required for this project.
* Open-minded and a team player, with good communication skills.
