Additive manufacturing, AM, poses new possibilities in design of cooled turbine and combustor components. Inherent in powder bed fusion type of printing is the unique surface characteristics. The surface is rougher than what results from typical substrative manufacturing or casting. This has a profound influence on the flow and heat transfer behavior in additively manufactured components.
During the last few years, we have invested significantly in fluid dynamics experiments and surface characterization, and we have laid the foundation in the understanding. Building on this knowledge, we now want to take the step to use computational fluid dynamics, CFD, to gain insights into the detailed flow behavior. In this thesis you will be a part of the work within different cooling geometries which will be fully resolved in the computational domain. The CFD will help us link the surface structure to the pressure losses and the heat transfer enhancement caused by the roughness.
Aims
This thesis work strives to fully understand the connection of heat transfer and AM surface roughness - a problem not yet understood in science.
* Contribute to establish the link between surface roughness and flow and heat transfer.
* Independently run CFD calculations on our cluster.
* Analyze results and draw conclusions.
* Present your results to a global team.
Let's talk about you
You study for a Master of Science in a relevant field which could be mechanical engineering or physics. You have:
* Analytical skills
* Problem solving capabilities.
* Ability to work independently.
* Curiosity and passion for sciences in the field of flow and heat transfer
Let's talk about us
You will be part of a larger team striving in the direction of maximizing the capabilities unlocked by additively manufacturing. Our team is built by heat transfer engineers, designers, test professionals and other master students. We are an international team, and work together in the global AM community of Siemens Energy.
