Master Thesis: Aerodynamic design for KTH Test turbine

A Snapshot of Your Day

The turbine component in our gas turbines usually include several turbine stages since the pressure ratio is too high for one stage. In prototype tests of real engines, we can only evaluate the total efficiency across all stages in the turbine. We cannot separate the difference in efficiency between the different stages. Neither is it possible in a real engine to perform detailed flow measurements with for example trace gas since it would be too hot for most measurement techniques.

When we want to measure such details, we need to use a low temperature test turbine. Siemens- Energy AB has such a test turbine at KTH in Stockholm in which many measurement campaigns has been performed.

The latest years we have investigated aerodynamic design different rotor blades. Now we want to do tests also with a variation of the nozzle guide vane. And therefore, we need to design a test object.

How You'll Make an Impact

You will perform an aerodynamic design of a new high loaded, low loss nozzle guide vane for our test turbine at KTH. This will include
* Preliminary design in our inhouse meanline tool (1-D)
* Generation of airfoil sections
* 3D optimization of the airfoil together with the rotating blade using commercial CFD tools

What You Bring
* Knowledge at MSc level with focus in mechanical engineering and flow physics.
* Good knowledge about aerodynamics, thermodynamics and CFD.
* Is structured and can communicate well.
* Can find own ways and solutions to challenges and problems.

About the Team
