Background
Today, the application of composite materials is expanding drastically. At Saab, we are using different composite materials in our systems frequently. Unfortunately, the experience of composite bonding in general is limited globally which makes the area a very attractive and up-to-date matter to investigate.
Your future challenge
Your project will be to investigate and identify how bonding of different material structures behave in different environments. The bonding, using adhesives, will be of both pure composite structures and composite-to-metal structures.
The master thesis aims to understand and conclude what material- and adhesive combinations are the most optimal depending on the concerned environment. The applicable environments on Saab are airborne, ground- and naval based products.
The master thesis students are expected to initiate with an empirical study to understand the industry of composites, metals and adhesives. From there, the students are expected to perform extensive work to conclude the optimal combinations of composite and metal bonding. Material testing will be included in the work.
Communication with different company functions such as engineering, production and purchasing will be required daily to move the project forward.
The project can be adapted to the students ' own input and ideas to some extent.
Your profile
Saab Surveillance is in search of two motivated and enthusiastic Master students with a Materials Engineering and/or Mechanical Engineering background or equivalent. English is the common corporate language. The thesis is planned to start in the first quarter in 2020.

The systems are used to detect, locate and protect against external threats. Engineering, a division within Radar Solutions, has around 400 employees located in Gothenburg. The production unit in Gothenburg is the main facility for the production of Radar systems.
This position requires that you will be approved in a security screening in accordance with the Swedish Protective Security Act.
