Master Thesis 3D-Printing of Large Structures at the Final Assembly of Gas Turbines

Are you a master student planning to write your Master Grade during Spring 2021 (January to June 2021)?

Join us on our journey #SiemensEnergy

Siemens Energy's 91,000 employees around the world are passionately pursuing one common goal: to energize society with affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy systems.

Join our great team and put your energy to use."

Description:

Background and Starting Position

3d-printing in plastic and metal is now more or less fully accepted as a repair, prototyping and manufacturing method for high-end products in gas turbines, aero-engines and other turbomachinery equipment. At Siemens Energy AB in Finspong, more than 90 employees work full-time with the design, preparation, logistics, development and realization of 3d-printing in our AM Center of Competence and workshops.

It is now also noted that the 3d-printing of large structures, larger than 3m, is possible in a variety of materials like concrete, geopolymers, plastics, wood and resin-mixtures etc.

Main Task

The main task of the two master thesis students is to explore if Siemens Energy AB can use such novel 3d-printing methods and materials for any large structures in the final assembly area at Norrmalm.

Proposed Steps
* After literature study (2 weeks) and an initial system and product screening (2 weeks) on site at the Norrmalm workshop, a list of potential candidates for 3d-printing shall be established. This step shall be done in closest possible collaboration with the product and process experts.
* The technical requirements shall be documented (2 weeks), but still on a higher level. Aspects like Mechanical Integrity, Sound Insulation, Fire Resistance, Explosion Containment, Weight, Sustainability and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions during manufacturing, Transport Questions, Resistance against Oxidation/Rust, Chemical Resistance, Earthquake Resistance etc. shall be considered. A matrix shall be the result of this step.
* The wide range of materials needs to be screened and described (3 weeks). Advantages and disadvantages must be compared to the technical requirements documented earlier. Collaboration possibilities with external actors on the 3d-printing market shall be explored, too (2 weeks).
* A little number of systems in different screened materials with the best weighted chances of technical, environmental, and commercial success shall be explored to a deeper level. Business cases (6 weeks) shall be presented. If possible, relevant teaser manufacturing (4 weeks) shall be performed as a further step on an industrialization journey of 3d-printed large structures.

Who are you?

We look for two master thesis students, applying individually or as a pair, from a Swedish university with a relevant background in Engineering or The Sciences. Mechanical Engineering, Technical Physics or Material Sciences are merits. You must have completed formal courses in additive manufacturing on basic level and should have more advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in the field. This master thesis project is the last challenge before your intended degree and all other academic exams are successfully behind you when you start at Siemens Energy. Excellent academic achievements during your studies are a merit.

You have already today the needed study and work permits for the entire planned period of the master thesis project plus 6 months (in case of delays or further consecutive employment opportunities).

English is either your mother tongue or spoken and written at a comparable level. Swedish is a merit.

We expect that you are of analytical nature and consider yourself as a team player with high social skills. The present pandemic situation makes it necessary to work with a high degree of independence and with less-than-complete guidance.
