Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions.

Background
Shot peening is a widely used technique for strengthening gears by introducing compressive stresses in the gear root. This is achieved by bombarding the surface with particles of a certain shape, size and hardness with certain process parameters e.g. time and shot velocity. As the process plastically deform the surface, it will not only affect the state of stress but also the surface roughness.

When Shot peening is the last manufacturing operation process it must take into account the surface roughness requirement by using relatively low shot velocities in order not to damage the surface too much. The process is then developed to balance cycle time, residual stress, air/energy consumption and surface roughness.

If you add for example a polishing process step after shot peening the surface roughness demand after shot peening can be changed, permitting higher roughness values. The question is how the process can be optimized based on this new requirement in order to save manufacturing costs?

Effect and Product goal
The goal of the project will be to find the optimal combination of process parameters to balance cycle time, energy and residual stress for the peening processes based on new surface requirements. This will be achieved by design of experiment (DOE), testing different combination of parameters and measure the result. Shot peening equipment, surface measuring techniques (2D and 3D) as well as XRD (X-ray diffraction) is available for performing tests and evaluate the results. The results should then be used to create a shot peening process simulator.
