Saab serves the global market with world-leading products, services and solutions ranging from military defence to civil security. Saab has operations and employees on all continents and constantly develops, adopts and improves new technology to meet customers’ changing needs. Saab has about 13,000 employees. Annual sales are EUR 2,5 billion. Research and development corresponds to about 20 percent of annual sales.

Place of action
Security and Defence Solutions, a business area of Saab, offers command and control systems, airborne early warning systems, civil security systems and solutions, training and simulation, as well as telecom carrier.

The Command and Control Systems Product Area (PA C2S) main product is the 9LV system family of naval combat management systems. It is characterized by large volumes of sensor data collected and processed to direct and control a range of weapons and other subsystems. Latency and other real-time characteristics have significant impact on the overall system performance, and many aspects of the design are based on optimization to meet the real-time constraints. However, optimization in one dimension causes penalties in other. One specific optimization is that of I/O hardware. The dominant approach is currently to collocate I/O boards (serial, resolver, etc.) with CPU boards on bus backplanes in cabinets. The application interface to the I/O is therefore via an operating system (Linux) driver. Though the driver/backplane I/O has traditionally saved latency, the cost of maintaining drivers for special I/O boards on new CPU boards is high, and with the higher performance of CPUs and LANs,
another solution might be possible. The other solution would be to integrate a simple long-life CPU with I/O into a “simple I/O box” and to interface the “simple I/O box” over the LAN. This way, the cost of driver integration will last much longer, and there will be no (or less) special I/O to integrate when new high-performance CPU boards are introduced.

Your future challenge
The Thesis shall identify overall system requirements and the corresponding design, including derived requirements and design constraints for a “simple I/O box” based topology. Special focus shall be put on overall system availability, the need for redundancy, life-cycle cost aspects etc.

Today's demands
We are looking for applicants from the Masters programs in Information Technology or related fields, with a genuine interest in technology.

The position entails working with classified information and requires Swedish citizenship.
