Method development for gear contact fatigue prediction for surface and sub-surface failures using FEM

Background to the degree project
Spalling is a failure mode on the gear flank due to bad lubrication, high temperature and high contact pressure and initiates in the sub-surface. The current used method is not able to predict the spalling occurs in the sub-surface.

Assignment description
• State of the art and literature study
• Complete modeling of the hypoid gear set
• Applying the developed methodology and evaluating the contact fatigue
• Validation of the evaluation result against experimental tests
• Understand limitations and improvements
• Understand possibilities for optimization

Goal
The predicting method needs to be developed and the way of working is needed for evaluation.

Education
Solid Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Experience and knowledge regarding gear calculation and manufacturing is preferable.

20 weeks.
