Thesis Background

The future of Marine vessels will be autonomous which will lead to an increase in demand for having connected services, to be able to communicate between different vessels and share useful information that would benefit boat owners while in the land, and water. The need for analyzing the data will also increase, and through use of Machine learning or AI, unlock the potential to detect unusual vessel behavior, provide better digital services through optimized routing, and improved EV charging habits.

With demand for connected solutions in the marine business, Volvo Penta is looking to move towards a new era where Vessel to Vessel or Vessel to X communication play an important role. The main challenge would be to investigate the future technology of connected vessels and services, but we are determined to develop a system which provides user-centric information that will benefit our customers.

Thesis scope of work

Aim

The objective for this thesis is to conduct a study, find and explore user needs, and suggest a concept of how connected vessels could improve the user-experience at sea. The outcome should encompass Easy Boating, which is Volvo Penta's guiding principle to simplify the total usage of a boat and to make the experience more enjoyable.

First step

Investigate the future technology of connected vessels and services, and how this would benefit both the customer and Penta in the commercial market. For example:
Identify the information that could be of interest to exchange between two vessels, or a vessel and a grid.
How could this information be used to create better features and functions? Or even optimize a fleet by adapting the speed depending on the timetable and position of other vessels for example.
Information that could help create a route plan for Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV) to maintain a windfarm, or plan for charging times at different location.
Research how different companies are working towards similar needs, and their approach in solving it.
The outcome will preferably be presented with possible ways of using the data logged from vessels that could help realize the concept of connected solutions, along with some recommendations for Penta in the future.

Second step

Investigate the possibility of Bi-directional charging. Example: V2V (Vessel to Vessel), V2S(Vessel to Shore), V2C(Vessel to Car). Approach this through benchmarking of external companies both within Marine and Automotive. The conclusions of the need are preferably presented as user journeys and user stories.
