Motivation and background:
The number of registered cars is continuously increasing in Sweden and congestion is a growing concern for commuters and for the environment. As commuting by car is the fastest mean of transport for many living outside cities or far away from any public transport links, it is important that the infrastructure can support the demand. However, traffic is a complex system and it is not always straightforward to understand the underlying reasons for congestion. The traffic environment, the vehicles and the drivers are all factors that will impact the characteristics of the traffic in a city. With the introduction of autonomous cars it has been an increased focus to understand what driver behaviour is favourable for traffic flow, energy efficiency and safety. With optimised driver behaviour in an autonomous car, it is shown that traffic capacity can increase. By understanding driver behaviour, lane changing and car-following, it is possible to design better autonomous driver models, better driver assistant system and road infrastructure.
Objectives:
• Perform a literature study on Traffic Simulation and Driver modelling
• Choose and characterize a road section that is prone to congestion using data
• Create a traffic simulation environment for the chosen road section and calibrate it to represent the current traffic.
• Validate the simulation environment using collected data
• Perform a parameter study to find what driver behavior will maximize traffic flow through the congested area.
