The Target Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Master thesis student.
Title of Master thesis/project: Building confidence in the computation tools for target activation
The validation of the calculation tools by means of available experimental data (benchmarking) in order to quantify accuracy of the estimations.
Project Description
The project will be integrated in the ESS Work Package #11 benchmarking unit. According with the proposed working plan of the WP#11 the main tasks of the student are: i) benchmark calculations for thick targets and ii) estimation of the excitation functions. The works involved in the above mentioned tasks consist in:
i) the geometry and physics modelling of the two available experimental set-ups, ii) the calculations performed based on the established models, iii) additional calculations required to account for coalescence effect, iv) graphical representation of the results, v) comparison and analysis of the results. The student will interact with other participants of the WP#11, mainly with CEA, France team on the analysis of the coalescence effect results.
Prerequisites Student
The student has to have already the basic background in the field of radiation transport (Monte Carlo method), activation (method and tools). He has to have experience in running large computer codes and to be skilfull in postprocessing the results. Good knowledge of the English language is also required.

The European Spallation Source ESS AB will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world's most powerful neutron source. ESS will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials - from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. The ESS project is partnered by 17 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. When the facility is in full operation 2025, ESS has around 450 employees.
ESS aim to ensure that staff are employed on the basis of ability and the requirements of the job, and that no applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment because of race, religion, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability.
