The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Manufaction Section Technician



Description of main responsibilities

The recently created Manufacturing Section will provide centralized time-critical support for a broad range of mechanical disciplines of manufacturing to all divisions, groups, sections, work packages and users at ESS. The initial focus is to support the current installation phase of the facility and will later include the commissioning phase and corresponding transition to steady-state operation.

The Manufacturing Section is recruiting for its first technician position. Together with the Section Leader, this technician will initially assist and support the establishment of a mechanical workshop and procurement of its machinery, equipment and tooling.

As machinery, equipment and tooling becomes available within the mechanical workshop, this technician will be responsible for completing machining, cutting and basic fabrication and welding activities. These specific manufacturing tasks will be focused on the time-critical and specialized needs of the facility, offering wide variation and interaction with most work packages including accelerator, target and scientific instruments.

This position offers a unique chance not only be involved in the renowned ESS project, but also assist in establishing a brand new mechanical workshop. Later, there will be opportunities for training and use of the latest CNC equipment, 3D printing, specialized welding and other high-tech processes. This technician will become a vital part of a highly competent and flexible team supporting the current and future manufacturing needs of ESS.

Qualifications:

• Minimum 5 years practical hands-on machine tool experience
• Relevant formal qualification
• Flexible use in various machine tools including milling, turning, drilling and cutting
• Broad knowledge of manufacturing techniques/processes
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills

Desired additional competencies of the successful applicant:

• Basic welding experience in MIG and TIG processes
• CNC machining experience
• Experience in use of CAD software
• 3D printing experience
• Previous experience working with scientific and/or R&D projects

Duration & Location
The position is permanent. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
