Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, in Finspång, is now seeking for a:

M.Sc student to complete an Experimental Diploma Thesis on Gas Turbine Pressure Losses.

Components in modern gas turbines may experience temperatures up to 2000K at rotational velocities around 2000km/h. Since no suitable materials can withstand such loads, much effort is put into the development of efficient cooling methods and these may be the difference between engine failure and success.

A typical vane cooling design consists of several branches of cooling air originating from the same source. The distribution of the air between the flow channels is determined by the counter-pressure and the pressure losses along the path. An incorrect modeled cooling system will result in an unexpected flow distribution which will yield a different temperature distribution than the one calculated. This may be causing mechanical integrity issues as well as overheating which both are possible reasons to turbine failure.

What does the Diploma Thesis entail?

The scope of the present Diploma Thesis is to use an existing experimental test rig for investigating pressure losses on holes with initial cross flow as well as rotating holes. This is a common flow situation in gas turbine discs. As a final result the student will use the experimental results for creation of a pressure loss correlation.

The test rig has previously been used by diploma students to investigate and develop correlations on a single circular orifice and impingement cooling. Both studies have been published in Journal of Turbomachinery and/or at ASME (TURBO-14-1171, GT2014-25619, GT2015-42475).

What do I need to qualify for this job?

The goal of the Diploma Thesis is to create a work of publication quality. Therefore, our demands on the student are high and you must be familiar with gas dynamics, dimensional similarity, numerical methods and Matlab. You must also be very driven, ambitious and prepared to work hard. Good skills in English language are required both in speech and writing.

Finspång, in the county of Östergötland in central Sweden, is one of the main sites of Siemens in Sweden. Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB (SIT) manufactures world-class gas turbines here. Siemens gas turbines are proven units for both power generation and mechanical drive applications and are widely used in the oil and gas industry. They offer outstanding reliability, efficiency and maintainability.

The work will start in the beginning of 2015 and be conducted in the fluid dynamic laboratory at the Siemens gas turbine site in Finspång, Sweden.

Estimated time

Literature study:1 month

Pressure loss measurements:4 months

Building correlation: 0.5 month

Writing Diploma Thesis: 0.5 month
