Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics
The Department is based at Ultuna Campus, Uppsala, and has about 60 co-workers. Our vision is "Better use of genetic resources". We perform research in molecular, quantitative and applied genetics, and bioinformatics for livestock, sport- and companion animals. We also contribute to several education programs at SLU, and provide genetic evaluation service and development for warmblood riding horses and standardbred trotters in close collaboration with the breed organizations. More information at https://www.slu.se/institutioner/husdjursgenetik/.

Description:
The Swedish warmblood horse (SWB) is one of Sweden's largest breeds. The breeding goal is to produce internationally competitive horses in jumping and/or dressage. The breeding of SWB horses has undergone several changes in recent decades. Breeding has become more specialized in either jumping or dressage, there is a large international exchange of both sport horses and breeding horses, and new traits are being recorded. In addition, selection decision of breeding horses has been moved from the breeding organization to the individual breeders own choice, which is supported by SWB's various stimulation activities and information initiatives.

Licentiate means two years of research education that ends with a licentiate degree. As a licentiate in this project, you will study the effect of the above mentioned changes in SWB breeding. By simulating different scenarios, we will be able to give recommendations for the future so that the SWB horses can continue to be competitive both nationally and internationally, which would clearly benefit the Swedish horse industry. A large part of your thesis will be about data modeling and it is important that you enjoy working with statistical analyzes.

Qualifications:
You have a master's degree in animal science, or equivalent, and you have a strong interest in breeding and statistics. It is an advantage to have experience of handling large amounts of data and to have knowledge in genetic analyzes.

Good skills in English (both written and oral) are required. The ability to understand and speak Swedish or another Scandinavian language is meriting. Due to the close collaboration with the breed organization in the project, emphasis will also be placed on good social skills. The ability to work both in teams and independently and to show initiative will be considered as merits for this position.
